My Soda Update {Finally}

So many of you have asked how I am doing with giving up my Diet Mt. Dew.  I'm really sorry I haven't given you an update sooner.  I was curious to see how long it had actually been since I did that post.  September 15th.  Wow...I didn't realize it had been that long!

I was waiting to update everyone when I had something positive to share.  And, the truth is, it got worse before it got better.   After I told everyone about my large daily intake of soda....I cut it down to 2 DMD's (that's what we call it) a day.  That lasted about three weeks.  And then, I was right back up to 6, 7, 8 a day.  I was really mad at myself...especially since I said I was going to do better for my family.  I will do anything for my family...or so I thought.

I was crying  talking to my husband and telling him that I am hungry ALL day long.  It's true.  I snack all day and then feel like I haven't eaten a thing.  We were having this discussion about 10:15 at night and there I sat with a big old glass of soda in my hand.  My husband said very kindly (he never wants to hurt my feelings...I love him!) that maybe all that caffeine and sweetner is making my hungry.  I think I already knew this....but hearing him say it, I realized that soda had some crazy hold of me.  That soda I was drinking that night would be my last one.

I am now finally ready to update all of you!  I'm so happy to say that today is 20 days since my last soda.  I have learned, that I don't have the ability to limit my soda to one or two a day.  That doesn't work for me...I have proven that to myself over and over.  Plus, if I have anything other than water in the house, I will definately choose that, instead of water!  I treat myself when we are out to dinner to one ice tea.  We no longer have soda in the house, which is a good thing for all of us.

The good news is that I feel better.  I am not hungry all the time anymore.  I don't wake up in the morning all bloated from the previous days soda consumption.  I have more energy.  I actually feel like I can do anything now.  And the best part, my family is really proud of me.

I just want to thank all of YOU for your kind comments and emails....and patience too!
You guys are the BEST!  I appreciate all of you.
I hope I never have to blog about Diet Moutain Dew again!

wow Kerri! Thanks for sharing this with us. I know this couldn't have been easy for you. . .any part of it, but I am amazed at your strength!

Wow Kerri! That's great! You know it makes me curious if the caffeine in my coffee (I drink at least 4-5 cups a day) is actually dragging me down. I know how hard it would be for me to give that up. So, I am super impressed and proud of you.

OK, I'm laughing out loud about that "internet high-five", that thing is friggin' hilarious!! But, above all, I should be saying a HUUUUUGE congratulations, I know how hard it is to break that diet soda habit (not personally, but my best friend has been struggling for years to break her Diet Coke habit - and I do mean struggling, it's been like an addiction, very very difficult).

What a great job, I'm so so happy for you!!!!

Great job! I know how hard this is too as I struggled with drinking soda and not feeling well. My nutritionist said I was not getting enough protein and to add it to my snacks etc. Like nuts, cheeses... It has helped and I drink lots of water and unsweet tea. :-) Hang in there, some days are tougher then others but you can do it!! Plus research those artificial sweetners, terrible stuff for your body! Luckily I can't eat or drink them I get really sick and bad headaches so I avoid all unnatural food.
Have a great day!
Blessings,
Jill

Woot Woot! I'm doing a happy high five for ya. I'm trying to do the same thing here. I don't mind having other things to drink in the house, such as apple juice or orange juice, but I think the NO SODA in the house rule is best for us too. I'm too much of an obsessive person to say, "I'll have one every now and then", as well. It's got to be all or nothing.
Proud of ya! That stuff is like liquid toxin isn't it?

Kerri, I am SO proud of you and I bet you do feel a million times better! Yesterday I had too much coffee and felt way too hyped up all day. I know it's not good for me too. I only do about 2 coke zeroes a day, so I'm not ready to give those up quite yet. BUT, way to go girlfriend!!!! :))

Kerri, your family is proud of you, and your friends are proud of you, and your body is WAY happy with you!! Now you are rid of all that caffeine, high acidity and toxic sweeteners!!! I was in that diet soda rut years ago, and feel so much better now that I drink pure water all day.

Keep up the good work~

Yay Kerri! Way to go! I gave up Diet Dr. Pepper last year on Memorial Day weekend and I haven't had any since. I am an all or nothing gal too. I am so happy for you. I crave water ALL THE TIME now, I wonder how much I needed before I gave up the soda. I hate that I ingested all that fake stuff for so long, it makes me worried about what it did to my insides. I am so glad to be free from that habit and I am happy for you. The worst part is over, you'll do great now! Celebrate.

Good for you!! wow... that is a lot to break from! =) Cheers!!

Do you like Mint?? they sell this yummy water called Metromint water... (google it) It is strong so I water it down and end up with 3 bottles from each Peppermint water bottle... I love love it! NO sugar!!

I JUST learned that diet soda DOES IN FACT make you hungry... it is better to drink regular soda if you are going to... go figure!! anyway... no soda is better!! I WISH I could give up coffee... I think I would have the same results as you!! I try to cut back... summer I can go down to 2 ... winter 3 cups a day... STILL.. .too much!! I want to be at one a day!! Maybe this year?!!

WAY-TO-GO Kerri!!! It is a very hard thing to kick that soda/caffiene habit. I am with you though, it has to be all or nothing.
I am truly proud of you. I will tell you (since I went through this already) that the craving might still be there for quite a few more months but it does go away - just STAY STRONG!!! Good job!

Wow!!! BIG HIGH 5. I've been thinking about you. :)
I can't wait until I am at 20 days free. I'm proud of you too. I had to quit cold turkey too. I just couldn't do it in moderation. I know we are going to feel better...and hey, who knows. Maybe we'll be sporting bikinis next summer with our flat bellies, right?

WOW!!!! I can't imagine giving up my diet coke. Fantastic job!

Kerri...
You got me laughing! A miracle indeed! I can't remember wearing a bikini...maybe when I was 10 or so???

Maybe we will go out w/o our cover-ups on more often??? We'll think positive!!! :)

To flat bellies!

Big ole High Five coming at you! That is great! I gave up my diet Dr. Pepper habit last year. Quit cold turkey and thought I was dying the first 2 days. Made it about 5 months before I started drinking Diet Coke from the fountain. It started with one when we'd go out to eat or to a movie. Then, I'd get one/day. Now I'm up to a lot. Not sure how many. I don't buy cans and keep them in the house, but it's probably worse b/c I am into the Big Gulps. I should really try to quit again.

way to go! I"m only on day 4 of my cleanse..but I'm doing it!

Nicolle said...

me again...I was thinking of you last night when I opened a coke zero. You are so strong! I am seriously going to try to give them up, soon! You have inspired me. I know I would feel a ton better too. :)

Good for you! It's a really difficult thing to ditch, and you are doing great :) My husband is addicted to Diet Pepsi and is trying to stop it - now he's subbing with coffee. He like, almost cries without his caffeine. I can understand - if someone stole the chocolate from me, I would go absolutely berserk!

Keep it up, Kerri! :)

Wow! That is hard! They trick us with the whole "Diet" thing. I'm trying to figure out what I can drink at night at work besides Diet coke to help me stay awake....I am trying Acia....we shall see.

Kerri, I know! ME TOO! Crazy with the diet pop! I also quit - cold turkey! I have to. I can't just have one or two. There is also NO pop in this house either - because I can't control myself. And when I go out to eat - I order water.
If I have anything I make myself a cup of green tea.
I am proud of us!
Have a pretty day!
